Adding Text Overlays and Title Formatting
What You’ll Learn
You’ll master the process of inserting text overlays directly onto your video timeline and formatting titles to create professional, eye-catching introductions. This skill is essential for grabbing viewer attention in the first three seconds and establishing your video’s message clearly through on-screen text elements.
Key Concepts
ClipChamp’s text overlay feature allows you to add multiple text layers at different positions and times throughout your video. Understanding how to access the text tool, position text elements precisely on the canvas, and adjust timing ensures your overlays enhance rather than distract from your content. The platform provides pre-formatted text options and allows full customization of text appearance, making it ideal for creating cohesive visual narratives.
- Accessing the Text Tool: Click the “Text” button in the left sidebar within the editor to open the text library, which contains various pre-designed text templates organized by style category (modern, elegant, playful, professional). Once selected, a text box appears on your timeline and canvas automatically.
- Positioning Text on Canvas: Use the drag-and-drop functionality to move text anywhere on your video frame, then use corner handles to resize the text box to your desired dimensions. The alignment tools in the right panel allow you to snap text to center, left, right, top, or bottom positions for consistent placement.
- Setting Text Duration and Timing: Drag the edges of the text element on the timeline to adjust when it appears and disappears in your video. You can make text appear during the entire video or for just a few frames by clicking and dragging the duration bars in the timeline.
- Title Formatting Techniques: Apply text formatting through the right panel options, including font selection, size adjustment, text color, background color, opacity, and shadow effects to create depth and readability even over busy video backgrounds.
Practical Application
Open a new ClipChamp project with sample footage and add a title text overlay in the first three seconds using the “Modern Title” template, positioning it center-aligned with a semi-transparent background. Adjust the text duration to match your intro length, then experiment with at least two different font sizes and shadow effects to see how they impact visual hierarchy.
