Key Concepts
A/B testing (also called split testing) compares two versions of a webpage or email to determine which performs better against a specific metric like conversion rate or click-through rate. Rather than rolling out changes site-wide based on assumptions, A/B testing shows actual customer behavior, often revealing counterintuitive results that contradict popular design trends. Effective A/B testing requires statistical significance—enough traffic and time to ensure results aren’t due to random chance. Many ecommerce businesses that test rigorously achieve 10-20% improvement in conversion rates annually through hundreds of small experiments.
- Hypothesis Formation: Begin each test with a clear hypothesis based on customer feedback, analytics data, or user testing, such as “changing the checkout button color from blue to green will increase conversion rate by 2%.” A strong hypothesis identifies the specific element you’re changing and predicts the expected outcome.

A test registry creates institutional knowledge that prevents repeating failed experiments and identifies patterns in successful optimizations.
- Multivariate Testing: Once you master A/B testing, advance to multivariate tests that simultaneously test multiple elements (headline, image, and button color together) to identify synergistic effects between design elements.
Practical Application
Identify your single highest-impact page (typically your best-selling product page) and design three A/B test hypotheses based on customer feedback or known pain points, prioritizing tests that target your conversion rate bottleneck.
